First let me say that I have never actually seen or handled either of the bags so I'm gong strictly by the information provided.
If you're thinking of using this for travel, I don't understand why you would choose this over the carry-on softsided bag. Same price, basically the same weight, they seen to be made of the same material, and I prefer a bag with backpack straps that can be put away rather than sticking out all the time.
The backpack is techinically too wide at 16" for some U.S. airline sizers. If forced to check, those backpack straps could get caught up in the baggage machinery and rip.
Now, if you're going to be doing some serious backpacking, then, from the pictures alone, the backpack looks better for that purpose than the carry-on.
Both bags are made of lightweight polyester. Polyester is not as durable as nylon. They do use a ripstock weave which helps prevent serious damage due to tearing.
At this point, I'd put the bag and one step above the OPEC and one step below the L.L. Bean Quickload.
Now, if Land's End wants to send me a Flightwise Carry-On to review, I would be able to give a better critique. (I tried looking for it in my local Sears stores but they don't carry them.)
