MEI Executive Overnighter - Reader Review
(Thanks to OBOW reader Paul for this review of a bag we haven’t yet seen: the MEI Executive Overnighter - photos below)
MEI Executive Overnighter - First impressions
Summary:
Well-designed 3- zip carry-on, similar to the Tough Traveller Tri Zip. Comfortable, well thought out shoulder straps. Hold-downs in main compartment. Outside snug straps to lessen bulge. High quality materials, handmade in the USA. Excellent packability.
Suggested improvements (note: I can personally live without these, but the Red Oxx Air Boss has addressed these items correctly and they would really work wonderfully with this product):
- make the front ‘outer’ pocket fully unzip (similar to the rear )
- The photos on the MEI website show the side handle(s) as two webbing loops, sewn down the side of the bag, meeting and joined by a leather ‘snap’ wrap (a la the Air Boss). However, the version as supplied shows a arrangement identical to the Voyageur, a molded plastic and web handle that is (heavily) sewed to the side of the bag (on top of one end of the outer snug straps). I don’t believe this is a bad design - I’m not seen any complaints in my research - but the other design would seem to bear the packed load better. I would perhaps suggest returning to that design. Time will tell if this is an issue or not.
- Add a discreet handle on either (or both) end(s) of the bag, to facilitate extracting from an overhead storage bin.
Like many readers of OBOW, I am a frequent carry-on business traveler in search of a well-made bag that will carry all of my business kit. My requirements were narrowed down to a carry-on sized, 3 compartment bag, that not only can be carried by a handle or shoulder strap, but has backpack straps, which I use frequently and is a prime requirement of mine, both for business and leisure travel. For biz travel, my Victorinox 2-zip carry on worked adequately, except that I could not include my laptop inside the bag - so I carried a separate laptop bag, which is what I wanted to eliminate.
In short, I researched and reviewed the alternatives as much as I could, and dropped them one by one. The current king, the Red Oxx Air Boss, would have been perfect, save that it did not have the backpack straps (I also eliminated the new Sky Train, both because it’s a 2 compartment zip - like the Victorinox - and I was not pleased with the non-ergo backpack strap design). I next considered the Tough Traveller Tri Zip, but after the excellent review on OBOW, reading Maharashii’s forum on his carry on search, and reviewing the basic backpack strap design, I eliminated it. I also eliminated the Easy Going Carryon, due to lack of backpack straps.
What I settled on is the MEI Executive Overnighter. This seemed to fit my requirements, (although the MEI website is somewhat limited on details, and shows only 2 photos) so based on reviews of the MEI Voyageur I decided to purchase.
Dimensions (approximate per my measurements):
Length 19.5 “
Width 11”
Height 14”
Rear Compartment 6”
Mid Compartment 3.25”
Front Compartment 1.75”
First impressions are very favorable. The bag is very nicely constructed, in 1000 D Cordura with a lighter internal material in black. (A note here about MEI customer service: Ahmed, the owner was excellent, calling me on a number of occasions to keep me abreast of the status, and on one occasion to tell me that the fabric in the khaki color I ordered was actually delivered to him in ‘taupe’ - a sort of medium brown / bronze - and he offered me the choice of this or another color. I elected to go with the taupe, and am very pleased with the appearance. It’s distinctive enough to be very recognizable at a glance but still understated, the way I prefer. I can say that I am very pleased with their service.)
The rear compartment is 6” deep and is the primary place where clothes go. In a ‘test pack’ I conducted, based on my usual 10-14 day complement of ‘business casual’ attire, it swallowed everything with room to spare. Also, there are 2 compression straps that snug everything tight against the inner wall (which is reinforced with a layer of foam). I use both packing cubes and Eagle Creek folding squares, which I definitely recommend.
The mid compartment is 3.25” wide and is perfect for carrying my Dell laptop, in it’s Tom Bihn Brain Cube (another excellent product….) with plenty of room for PC accessories packed in a Eagle Creek ‘half cube’, along with my gym shoes in a shoe bag. (A hint for TSA inspections: I was ‘inspected’ twice on previous trips until I figured out that the blocky Dell power supply was the object of the TSA search. Now, I not only put the laptop in the inspection bin but also the half cube with the power supply. Bingo, no more rifling through my bag.)
The front compartment is 1.75” in width, and I put one of my 2 folding squares there (with room left over for thin/small odds and ends) which adds a bit of protection for my laptop (as if it needs more than the Brain Cell). However, I could easily place this in the back and save this room for my book, magazine / newspaper, etc. that I generally carry for amusement. In addition, there are some smaller zip-pockets inside this compartment that can hold some smaller odds and ends.
On that score, there also is a fill length zip lengthwise across the front, that creates another space perfect for the aforementioned magazines, airline tickets etc. This pocket sits to the outside when the bag is carried via the shoulder strap.
As to the backpack straps, they are a duplicate of those on the Voyageur, with a nice sternum strap. The only difference is the waistband is a pair of webbing straps, with a large plastic clip to connect them together, different from the Voyageur design of 2 padded ‘wings’ either side of the waist. Not as comfortable, but saves a lot of space that I personally like. The straps are easily the most comfortable of the designs I have experience with, although slightly thicker than most.
The bag came with a nicely designed shoulder strap, with a thick pad and length adjustment from both ends of the strap. I currently have a strap with a gel-based pad that I prefer, but the included one is better than most I’ve seen provided as standard.
The bag comes standard with a MEI-made suiter accessory, but Ahmed indicated that he currently did not have any of them in stock and will send this accessory to me as soon as they become available, so I cannot currently comment on that function. However, the bad requires no modifications to use it and no extra charge.
All in all, I feel that this bag is a high quality, practical alternative in this market, given the limited amount of available products in the 3-zip category. For me, this bag is better overall than the Tri Zip, although the Air Boss has some features (not to mention it’s truly bulletproof construction, which really seems to be in a class above) that would adapt to this bag beautifully.

Here are pictures of the updated EO from Skip:
“Here are some new shots of the MEI Executive Overnighter I got. I tried to get shots of the changes…showing that all 3 compartments open out flat, the new second pocket on the outside, the new handles on the end (cool pattern on the fabric), the “key clip”, etc.”

Skip, I think you'll love your EO bag. I initially ordered one in December, received it in January, and sent it back for some modifications. As you said, Ahmed is very kind and easy to work with. My main complaint about the first version I received was that the external compression straps only compressed the front 2 compartments. The main (large) clothes compartment remained un-compressed. I'm an IT guy who flies most weeks to client sites, and I'm a one-bag guy, period. I check into the hotel Monday night, the clothes go into a drawer in the hotel room, and the bag functions as my computer/office bag until Thursday when I throw my dirty clothes back in the big compartment to fly home.
I used an Air Boss ever since they came out (with a slim briefcase that often got packed in the large center compartment), but craved good backpack straps like my MEI Voyageur that I use for leisure travel. At the same time I ordered the EO, I also bought and promptly returned the Sky Train. While I adore my Air Boss, I thought the backpack straps on the Sky Train seemed like an afterthought. Very uncomfortable with my typical 20-lb load, and also cumbersome due to being covered with a fleece material that grabs your clothing while putting on the pack. I suggested in an email to RedOxx that they look at a MEI Voyageur to see how backpack straps should be made.
When I returned my MEI EO to Ahmed in January, I included a photoshopped picture indicating the design changes I desired. This included full circumferential compression straps, plus additional grab handles to make it easier to pull the bag out of overheads or from under a plane seat. Ahmed made all the changes I desired, plus more. For example, he added internal compression straps to the middle compartment plus extended that zipper so it would lay flat. I got my new/improved EO a couple weeks ago. I'm actually going to order another one from him, because I would like a few more minor modifications, but I do NOT want to be without this bag at all for any length of time. I have the Air Boss, the Rick Steves Convertible, a Victorinox Weekend Overnighter, and several other bags, but this MEI Executive Overnighter is far more useful and comfortable than any of them, period.
The mods that I want on my next EO are pretty minor, but this bag is so close to perfect, that I want to get it completely right, and take my chances on ebay with the one I'm using today. My desires on the next version:
1. 2 more retention loops to hold the external compression straps in place on the bottom (non-zippered) side of the bag. This would enable the compression straps themselves to be used as "grab handles" without them shifting position on the bag.
2. On my bag, the zipper on the smallest (2") compartment does not open all the way to lay flat like the 5"(next to back) and 3"(center) compartments do. I want all three to open all the way. To see what I mean, in Paul's picture above (the bottom picture), only the 5" compartment opens to lay flat.
3. On the outside flat pocket (the 4th compartment, if you will), the zipper on mine closes downward when the bag is used as a backpack (which I'll be doing 99% of the time). So it opens from the bottom, which seems like it would increase the risk of a forgotten partially-open zipper leading to lost items.
3. Inside the 2" compartment, I'd like a clip/lanyard for my keys. There's a zippered pouch built into the bag which works pretty well for keys, but when I get out of my car at the airport on Monday I like having a solid clip to hold my keys, and to know they'll be exactly there on Thursday when I get back to my car. I'll be accessing the current pouch during the week at times, so there would be a (slight) risk of the keys getting misplaced.
Like I said, those are all really minor desires. The bag as-is is extremely nice, superbly comfortable when using the backpack straps, and it has great hardware. The external compression straps are awesome, making the bag feel very solid on my back even if the clothes compartment is empty.
After a multi-year yearning for The Perfect Bag for my weekly business flights, I've found it. The MEI Executive Overnighter. Skip and Paul and I have of the early prototypes, and with the changes that Ahmed has made since November, the bag has gone from Great to Near-Perfect.
p.s. Someone above asked about being able to fit extra shoes into the center compartment. It would be a tight fit if your foot was very large. But the great thing is that if you need the bag customized, and don't mind waiting, I think Ahmed would be willing to do it. For example, instead of the 5"-3"-2" compartments I have in my bag, he could make your center compartment 4". I'm not speaking for him at all--I'm just a thrilled user of this bag who has had very cordial service from Ahmed, and I think he'd be willing to do this for relatively little extra cost.
Thanks for the new pics! I really like the look of this bag, and I can't wait to Skip's thoughts when he gets his.
Jackie
Just a thought, but one of the things I find most appealing is the ability to carry a laptop in my carryon. I use a Rick Steves convertable bag, and that's a big reason why. The big outside zippered pocket can take my laptop. It's not great protection, but it does fit.
Ummm...is it just me or can you only see the first 50 comments? I'm guessing there's a "page 2", but there isn't any way to get to it that I can see...
Help? ;)

I'm working Squarespace on hte post visiblity problem - Brad
Thank you all for the information! This bag looks to be one of the best offerings in the 3 zip catagory!
My new bag isn't here yet but I'm already planning for it's maiden voyage. Quick question guys, on the most efficient way to pack the EO bag. I've read Paul's review, and all the comments here. Along with your clothes and electronics, which compartment worked best for your other items? Toiletries kit/laundry kit/etc? I'm only asking because once I get my bag I won't have much time to experiment before I head out.
Thanks!
Loads of good responses & info here! Bradley ~ I would really like to see what you sent Ahmed to mod your EO bag. I like what you are doing, although I'd sure hate to be without my bag.. when I travel it's usually at short notice and all I have is my RS bag (although I'm sure I can make do if necessary). Perhaps I can post my e-mail or something (do not want to overstep something here Brad)
Now, sure would like to see some other EO bag pics!
P.
PS - I've been wanting to put together some info and pics on how I pack for biz. May take some time though, been busy lately at work ...
Another note - one more kudos to Brad for providing this great site. Thanks!
I am trying to choose between the Air Boss and this new MEI bag. Can anyone offer their thoughts and experiences on how much difference the backpack straps make? I can't decide if I need backpack straps or if a good shoulder strap on one shoulder will do the job. Comfort, usefullness, etc? My normal business kit weighs in at 15 lbs or less.
Thanks!
Roy
I would really like to see the info and pics of how you pack Paul. That would be a good thread to start!
I will most definitely get some pics of my new EO bag, when it gets here! I'm feeling impatient!! ;-)
Roy, at 15 pounds or less a shoulder-only bag may work for you. No matter what brand you choose I would recommend a Tom Bihn Absolute strap. It is more comfortable than the unpadded (though very tacky and rugged) Air Boss Claw strap. With that light a load you may want to use some packing cubes. The Air Boss is quite roomy and everything may collect in the bottom if you aren't tightly packed. You might consider a smaller bag if your normal items aren't bulky.
Appearance is another thing - the shoulder bag looks more professional if that's important. Sport coats and backpacks don't always mix well.
Is it just me...or has anyone else noticed that this new MEI bag has raised more comments then anything else on this wonderful site??
Just sayin' !!!! ;)
There's no question that this is true. Thanks to Paul.
My bag came in today! Very pleased with the build. It looks like I have one between the prototype and the one that Skip (I think?) was having modifications on. Compared to Paul's review picts on this post, mine is steel grey (VERY nice color), has two side handles for getting it in/out of an overhead compartment, and the external compression straps are 1.5 inches wide instead of 1 inch. I also have internal straps in the main and middle compartments. Overall a solid construction and I'm pumped to take it out for a trip. The backpack straps are almost comically over padded compared to other bag's straps - and look like they'll feel great.
Ahmed said the garment bag and new strap should be shipped in a week or two.
Skip, have you received your bag yet??
Problems with the comments again. Yesterday there was a "Page 1 / 2" option after the first 50, but it's gone today.
It's working again now - "next 50/p. 2" now visible. I've had Squarespace support on it twice, must be intermittent. Might just try refreshing.
I too have had problems getting in touch with MEI. While Ahmed did respond to my initial email/phone call the first day subsequent calls/emails have gone unanswered.
I would really like to purchase this bag but MEI really needs to work on streamlining their business.
Hey Skip, has your "new and improved" bag shown up? Come on, come on...MORE PICS!!!!
I have a question for Jeff, Skip, and especially the original reviewer. Did you ever get your garment folder? I see in the original review that it wasn't ready yet but would be shortly...has it shown up? If so, what is it like? If not, why??
I think I would like this bag better then the Air Boss, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to go with the Air Boss because I have been waiting for several weeks and I just cannot get ANY contact back from MEI/Genuine Gear. Are they still in business????
Roy
Roy,
I haven't received my new shoulder strap or garment folder yet, but I really don't expect to for the next two weeks. That being said, while I can live without the garment folder I'm really looking forward to the new shoulder strap.
Genuine Gears is still in business (as I ordered my bag AFTER reading the reviews on this site in late March). I wonder if Ahmed is just getting swamped with calls from this forum. When he called me back one time, he had to make sure I was the correct person because he had so many people to call back. I think he's just a one man shop too.
I would urge patience and persistence as it's a great bag, but I understand your frustration.
I can understand being a one man shop, and I love being able to support any company which stays in the USA. But I have to admit it makes it hard to do business with a company that is so hard to get in touch with.
I'm amazed reading the comments here, and seeing that the MEI website shows a bag so different. "Ahmed" who seems to be with MEI posted almost 2 months ago that they would update their website with new photos that week, and it still isn't done? Doesn't that say something about the company??
Ok, my friends, here's an update.
I received my Executive Overnighter! It is incredibly well built, better then I had even hoped. (The only thing I didn't like was that MEI opened the center compartment to lay open rather then the front one. If I can only have 2 open I need the outside ones for clothes) Now the weird part. I promptly returned it.
Looking at the bag I realized that I wanted a few of the other changes we have discussed on this forum. And I knew that once I used it I wouldn't be able to let it go back. So I decided to "get it perfect" from the start. The changes I've asked Ahmed to make are:
1) The front compartment to unzip completely for packing. (I use the center section for my laptop, I would be fine if that one didn't lay flat. But the other two really need to lay out and have compression straps)
2) A second external pocket, preferably zippered. At least big enough for a boarding pass. (I offered 2 possible locations for it, we'll see what Ahmed comes up with)
3) 2 more retention loops to hold the external compression straps in place on the bottom (non-zippered) side of the bag.
4) A “key lanyard” or “key clip” to hold my car keys when I travel. (I don't NEED this one, but it sure would be nice!)
I really think that, with these changes, the EO is going to be the ultimate business bag. And now that the bag in back at MEI, I can't wait to get it back! So now my traveling "fate" is in Ahmed's hands...I hope this doesn't take long!! But regardless I know that high quality and workmanship are worth waiting for.
I will post updates as soon as I get the bag back!!!!
Skip
Skip, great points. Thank you for the update. I'm waiting for the design to stabilize a bit before I order and with all of the changes that have been and will be implemented this bag is going to be awesome. The one additional suggestion I would have would be a mesh drink holder or perhaps 2 -- one that could be used while in "suitcase" mode and another that could be used in "backback" mode. This would be perfect for complete hand's free travel. I look forward to getting one!
Thanks, I agree with you. The bag as I received it is better built then any piece of luggage I've ever seen. When Ahmed and MEI finish with the modifications I'm asking for I think this is going to be the ultimate business bag...and may well be the ultimate bag for EVERYTHING!
I spoke with Ahmed yesterday, and I am hopeful that it won't take too long to get the bag back. I have two significant trips coming up in May, and it would be a perfect chance to test it in real world travel.
Skip
I have had my MEI EO for about 2 weeks now. As Skip said, the bag is very well made and I feel it will last me a long time even with traveling nearly every week.
Only the main compartment on my bag opens all the way. The remaining 2 compartments open about half to 3/4s of the way. Also, my bag has 2 additional handles added on either end of the bag which makes it easier to removed from an overhead compartment.
I would agree with Skip that the following changes should be made to make this bag nearly perfect:
1. Add 2 retention loops on the bottom of the bag to old the external compression straps. Without these, the external compression straps tend to slip off the bag at times.
2. A key ring clip in any of the pockets. I feel this is important, because it keeps the keys in an easy to reach place.
3. (Pete's suggestion) Two mesh drink holders as also mentioned above. It sucks getting on a plane and having to hold my drink, bag, computer and a book. I like to have my computer and book out when boarding to speed the boarding process once on the plane.
4. Two external pockets, zippered or non-zippered I'm not picky, to hold my boarding pass. One could be placed on the face of the 3rd and smaller pocket. It could run perpendicular to the zipper for the external pocket, with the opening near the zipper for the external pocket. The second could be placed on the bottom of the bag. This part of the bag will be on your right when worn as a backpack. The pocket can be placed on the main compartment's bottom and the requested retention loops can be placed on the middle compartment's bottom.
I wish I had the option to send my bag in for the above changes, but I am traveling every week until the end of July beginning of August and can't do without this bag. Maybe when it slows down, Ahmed will make the changes to my bag.
Other observations about the bag:
1. I feel this bag is definitely geared more toward business travel than leisure travel. To make it more leisure travel friendly, all 3 compartments would need to open fully and contain compression straps.
2. The bag can be uncomfortable if over packed and being worn as a backpack. The backpack straps are comfortable, but when walking around an airport for 30 minutes or more with nearly 30 pounds of items in it, it still hurts. (I'm still trying to cut back on my necessities, but it is business travel and many things must be brought along).
3. Using the TB Absolute Strap is great on this bag. Even with 25 to 30 pounds on my shoulder I didn't have much of a problem. I use the strap option when going through security.
If you are trying to obtain one of these bags, please be patient with Ahmed. Your patience will be rewarded with a great bag.
Hopefully I can get some pictures in the next week or 2 of the bag packed and unpacked.
I would like to thank Brad for this site, since without it I would not have converted tot he one bag lifestyle.
I would also like to thank Paul, for reviewing this great bag. Without the review I never would have known this bag existed.
According to Ahmed I was number 6. Feels good to be part of a minority and spread the word on this great bag.
Some added information for others considering this bag for business. It was mentioned above that the TB Brain Cell did not fit well in this bag. That is a correct statement. I tried and it bulged the center compartment too much. I went with the REI E-wrap computer sleeve with a TB snake charmer. Both fit comfortably in the center compartment and the computer is easy to remove for security.
I added the TB Absolute strap, since the strap that comes with it was not available yet.
Now I need to decide if I wish to continue bundle-wrapping or convert to the Eagle Creek folders.
Great set of comments, Xodus! And I agree completely about the need for all the compartments to open to lay flat. And I also feel that this change may well make this bag every bit as useful for leisure as it will be for business. Time will tell....
I will be very curious to hear what your thoughts are on the bundle wrapping process. The jury's still out on the best way to pack this bag. Now THAT would make a great web article/thread!!!!
Oh, and as I've said before, hand made in the USA does take more time...and is well worth the wait!! Ahmed is a fantastic guy to do business with. In fact in addition to my EO I'm on the waiting list for a Voyageur as well. Hopefully within the next month or so I will have both.
Skip
I got a call from Ahmed little bit ago. we were able to chat for about 20 minutes. He told me that he is going to be able to incorporate ALL of our requested changes into my bag. Opening the 3rd compartment to lie flat, additional loops on the compression straps, a 2nd zippered outside pocket, a key clip for car keys...and, because of some of the comments here, he is also going to add a water bottle pocket!
I will have my new "super bag" back within 2 weeks. I'll get pics right away, if anyone's still interested.
Xodus, I feel for you....wow, 30 pounds? That has to make you ache. Is it more of a problem with a backpack, or with a single shoulder strap like the Air Boss??
The weight is more of a problem when using the bag with a single shoulder strap. The TB Absolute Strap does make it bearable through the TSA security checkpoints, but the backpack option is definitely a better way to go. It is still uncomfortable when carrying the bag for durations over 30 minutes.
I am still trying to lighten the load, but I am usually gone for 4 - 5 nights and I have to carry certain items to perform my job that contribute to the weight.
I can't wait to see the modifications to the bag. Hopefully, I can get some of the mods done to my bag when my travel schedule slows.
In response to a question, when I received my EO bag I did several "test packs" with it before returning it for modification. I found that I could very easily fit a pair of size 11D shoes in the center compartment. I first tested with a pair of dress slip-ons, and then a pair of running shoes. I found I could lay a shoe on each side of the compartment, running along the 14" length. Even the running shoes fit easily, without any indication of stretching or "tightness" in the material or around the zippers at all. Carrying the shoes actually seemed to have an additional benefit. It seemed to give the bag some additional support, or "shape", in the center section. I also think that having shoes in the center compartment would give some additional protection to my laptop!
Anyone have any updates?
Hi Pete, and everybody else as well!
I spoke with Ahmed last Wednesday. My EO bag, with all of the mods we've discussed, is supposed to ship to me tomorrow. Hopefully that means I will receive it by the first of next week. I have 2 trips coming up, they should be great 'test out' trips for the new bag. If anyone's interested, and Brad's willing, I can get pics of the upated bag before I leave.
And I will, of course, post another detailed update as quickly as I get it!
Skip
You send 'em, I'll post 'em.
Well if you'll post 'em, I'll take 'em and send 'em!
;)
I'll get some both empty and loaded before I leave on my first trip. I'll also give some details on the improvements!

Skip, any idea if all Executive Overnighters will incorporate all the mods? Also, how do you go about purchasing a bag from MEI? I left a message this morning, but have not heard back... as far as I can tell, you can't order online. Is that right?
Jon, good questions! First let me say that MEI is a small operation. Their bags are made, by hand, here in the USA. They are small, and all sewing and assembly really IS done by hand, but Ahmed is a very good person to do business with. That being said, it is best to look at a bag from MEI like a handmade violin. They are incredibly well made, but they don't get finished quickly. If you need a bag next week, I can't recommend MEI. Not yet, anyway. Ahmed IS aware of the problem, and is working to make changes. We've talked about it, a lot. I hope he can, it will be necessary for his business to thrive.
As to how to order, you can call their number from their site (www.meipacks.com), or you can write to them at "mei-legacy@netscape.com". (that's also their PayPal I.D.) Ahmed reads all the mail personally, and he will respond. I have never had to wait more then 2 days to hear back from him.
As to the modifications, I think I'm the guinea pig. I know from long conversations with Ahmed that unless something doesn't "work" as intended, all of the mods ARE planned for every Executive Overnighter from here on out.
Btw, I don't work for Ahmed. ;) I would just really like to see an American company do well. This bag could be HUGE, better then the Air Boss.
Thanks Skip! Ahmed actually called me this afternoon, so he did return my call within 2 days. We had a nice chat about the EO, his philosophy behind MEI, etc. He confirmed that all the new bags from here on out will include the mods and that he plans on doing the next production run in a couple of weeks. He said that I should have no problem receiving my bag by mid-June (in time for a planned trip) and also said that I could order the bag in coffee (which is not listed as an option on the website).
I had been debating between the Air Boss and this bag, and am glad that I resisted temptation to pull the trigger on the Air Boss.
BTW, I forgot to mention that Ahmed was very appreciative of this review and everyone's input into how to make the bag better. Keep up the work!
That's great, Jon, I'm glad you heard from Ahmed. I thought you would.
You got one in coffee? I LOVE that color!
Jon....I hate you. ;)))
I received my overnighter last night, the same bag with alterations which Skip ordered.
I've over the MEI travelpack since the old ownership and have been using the Air Boss since that came out. I travel a great deal, particularly in Europe, and sometimes for stretches of three weeks to a month.
Although I loved the Air Boss, frankly it is too much of a drag to carry around without, even on shorter trips where I have to walk great distances in an airport. So, I went back to my MEI Travelpack because of the sheer convenience of using it as a backpack.
But, I did miss having the three sections and I found having one large compartment less than ideal. So, I ordered the Overnighter and have been following this discussion.
I got it yesterday and I have to say it is fabulous. Ahmed too forever to get it out to me, but kept in touch and has been great. And the bag was well worth the wait. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera and can't do pictures, but I just wanted to drop this note to leave this recommendation.
By the way, I travel with tons of stuff and also use a Gator bag which Redoxx make special for me. I have to carry a lot of paperwork in European format, which is larger than 8 1/2 X 11, and asked Redoxx to make a larger bag for me. I never have a problem getting this bag on an airline, as you have a right to two bags and the TSA always assumes it is a computer bag.
I also pack in my larger carry-on something like the Tom Bihn Café bag which I use for my daily travels when I stay in a hotel for several days or rent a car while traveling.
I find the Redoxx products to be superbly well made, but Ahmed has gone one step further by producing something nearly as good as the Air Boss but with backpack straps. He has a small operation and it is going to take you a while to get your bag, but don't hesitate if you have the time and money.
My apologies, but the above post had too made typos and I could not delete the post. This is the same text with some corrections
I received my Overnighter last night, the same bag with the alterations requested by Skip.
I've owned the MEI Voyageur since the old ownership and have been using the Air Boss since that came out. I travel a great deal, particularly in Europe, and sometimes for stretches of three weeks to a month. I bought the Air Boss because it seemed far more organized and I liked the idea of three compartments. It is a terrifically well made and I love everything about the design and build of the bag.
Although I loved the Air Boss, frankly it is too much of a drag to carry around without back straps, even on shorter trips where I have to walk great distances in an airport.
Ahmed took forever to get it out to me, but kept in touch and has been great. And the bag was well worth the wait. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera and can't do pictures, but I just wanted to drop this note to leave a glowing recommendation.
Congratulations Joe, I think you're going to love your bag! I spoke with Ahmed last night, my bag will be here tomorrow. I'll get some pics right away, and see if Brad will let me e-mail them to him before I leave on my first trip. I'll try to write a brief overview as well. Then, of course, I'll put a full review together after I get back.
Now I'm jealous of the alterations. I've had my bag for a couple of months and will be taking it on it's first trip (of many in upcoming months) next week. But now I want the changes...
Dang it Skip...I love this bag, but you just had to go and make me want to change it slightly. Really, while I would like the full zippers on all pockets, what I really want is the bottoms loops for the compression straps. It's not that big a deal, but it would be nice.
Gosh Jeff, I'm sorry about that. Look on the bright side, you've got an early prototype of a bag I really think is going to be hotter then the Air Boss. And you're thoughts and comments here helped make that possible...pretty cool, huh? ;)
And, don't feel like the Lone Ranger...Jon is getting one in MEI's "coffee" color...so I'm HATING the fact that I went with basic black!
Have you considered contacting Ahmed? I would be willing to bet he'd send you the strips of material they're using for the bottom retention loops. And I also bet you could find a local shoe repair shop to sew them in place for you!
Well I'm supposed to receive my bag today, and I'll get some pics tonight. The only thing I'm not sure about is the 3rd compartment. Ahmed told me that it's been opened up to lie flat like the other two, but that he didn't add tie-down straps. MEI's reasoning is that this compartment is designed to take a garment folder. I can understand that, but not every trip I take requires a folder. I guess I'll see how it works out, and if I find I really need the tie-downs I'll be searching for a local shoe repair shop myself...to add a couple of straps!! ;)))
Skip / Brad,
Any new information or pics?
Glad I checked back in here. I spent an hour typing up that super-long post #51, and when it didn't show up I just gave up and left. :) I do IT stuff for a living, so I don't have much patience for non-functional sites. Thanks for fixing it!
I've been using my EO almost every week for 2 months, and love it. I want the modifications that I mentioned above, so I'll order a 2nd one at some point. Another option would be to just take my bag to a local upholstery shop and have them stitch the external compression straps in place (in the middle of their length). But I do also want lay-flat zippers. Hmmmmm.
I'm on a non-biz trip this week, and I actually brought my Rick Steves Convertible. When I got home from my last biz trip, I did my laundry and re-packed the EO. So I just didn't want to un-pack everything from the EO and have to repack it later. I almost decided on my Voyageur, but hadn't used the Steves bag in a year or more so decided to give it another try. And, let me tell you, I'm missing my EO. The Steves bag is ok...I'm just spoiled by the EO's comfort and quality.
Since switching to the EO two months ago, I haven't missed my Air Boss at all...it's just collecting dust in a closet. I'm sure I'll find a use for it at some point though.
Bradley,
Can you tell us something? How does the RS convertable compare with the Voyageur? Which packs better? What are the good points/bad points of each, for leisure? Which works out better for you? And probably more important to we fellow readers, why?
Don't you love questions like that? ;)

Hello folks! ;)
Sorry to be out of touch, I was gone for 5 days. Not much fun, but it WAS the first road trip for my new EO bag. The short version is…WOW! The long version is as follows:
I received my ‘updated’ EO bag just in time to pack for my trip. I looked it over, packed it up, and hit the road.
1) Ahmed has put in all of our requested updates except for the water bottle holder. I think I can live with this, no sweat. It was always a “would be nice to have” but not critical to me. (Although if Ahmed ever decides to try it, I do like the water bottle “sleeve” on a Rick Steves convertible. It’s just a single mesh “wall”, or half a pocket, sewn up against the bag with a tightening string to draw it in tight) But again I am just fine with not having it. The RS bag is the only convertible bag of any brand I can think of that has one.
2) Like the other two compartments, the front one now unzips completely for packing. (I use the center section for my laptop, but really wanted the other two to lie out flat) This is a GREAT update to the bag! I do want to point out again that my bag doesn’t have compression straps in this third compartment. MEI designed this compartment for a garment folder, and it’s perfect for that. AND I also want to point out that I spoke at length with Ahmed tonight, he wanted to know everything I thought about the bag. He understands my point about not always needing a garment folder, and why I would like to see this pocket have the tie-downs. And Ahmed being Ahmed, he told that “if my customers want it, then I need to do it”. Period. So it would seem that all future EO bags will now have compression straps in all the compartments.
3) The EO now has a second external pocket, zippered. Ahmed took my suggestion (and overlooked the weakness of the drawing I sent him without teasing me about it) and there is now another pocket sewn on the outside of the full length external pocket. It is the width of the space between the external compression straps, about 1” below the original pocket’s zipper, and extends the rest of that side’s depth. It proved to be the perfect size for me, it took my boarding pass, and my 3-1-1 zip lock, and my sunglasses in their case. Even the location is great; it was right where I could get into it without taking the bag off my shoulder.
4) MEI added 2 more retention loops to hold the external compression straps in place on the bottom (non-zippered) side of the bag. Now the straps don’t move around at all, and they can even be grabbed as handles if needed to get the bag out from underneath a plane’s seat.
5) A “key lanyard” or “key clip” was added to hold my car keys when I travel. MEI added it to the smallest compartment.
6) Ahmed is still working to develop the matching garment folder for the EO, it will either be a garment folder or a removable garment bag. I expect that final design decision to be made in the very near future.
7) MEI is also getting close to the new and improved shoulder strap. Now THAT I’m looking forward to getting!
That’s about it. I packed it with my full normal business traveling load; it took it all and was waiting for more. I still need to work though the best way to pack this bag, but that’s pretty much normal for any bag you get. I bundle wrapped most of my clothing, but I’m going to experiment with cubes and packing sacs to figure out what works best for my other ‘stuff’…toiletries, washing kit, first aid kit, etc. Any thoughts from others who’ve used this bag, or similar, would be much appreciated!
I do believe that MEI has developed the perfect carryon bag. With the final set of design changes, it may well be the single best bag available for both business and leisure travel.
Oh, and of course Ahmed being Ahmed, he told me that he is going to ship a full set of internal compression straps and buckles to me tomorrow. I can just find someone locally to sew them in place in my third compartment. Ahmed is, for those who haven’t had the pleasure of dealing with him, a rare breed these days…he really is customer focused, and he really is a true gentleman.
I’ve just e-mailed a set of new pics to Brad, so hopefully those will be posted shortly.
A very sincere THANK YOU to Brad, for this incredible website!!!

Skip,
You asked about Voyageur compared to the Rick Steves Convertible. I used the RS bag for 8 days in the past 2 weeks. I really like the overall design of the bag. Its only real failure is the cheap and uncomfortable backpack straps. The Voyageur (like the EO) has very comfortable backpack straps. The reason I chose the RS this time is that this trip was 80% recreational, 20% business. So I had my laptop and other business toys with me, and the RS has more compartments to organize small items. The Voyageur is essentially just one huge compartment. Looking back, I wish I had just taken the Voyageur. The RS doesn't even have a chest strap, which I missed while pulling 2 other bags (helping my wife and kid with their luggage). The RS straps kept slipping around on my shoulder, and I ended up with a kink in my neck. I've never had that problem with the EO or Voyageur. So the RS bag goes back in the closet for another year. :)
Hi...this bag sounds perfect, however, so much inforamtion has been shared, I'm a little confused...will anyone who has the latest version of the Executive Overnight please answer the following questions:
What is the emtpy weight (and weight with garment carrier if anyone has one).
How many external straps are on it?
Which compartments have internal straps? And do the outside compartments open up fully (3 sides)?
Are there any outside pockets?
Is the width dimension really 9" or does it go out more? I travel by air in Europe and those sizers are killers.
Thanks.
