OBOW Light Travel Forum > Do you travel with bar soap?

Does anyone have a brilliant tip on how to carry bar soap so it doesn't leak or get all gooey? The only soap boxes I can find are cheap plastic boxes that leak. I can solve that with a ziplock bag. but, how about the goop? Maybe something that will absorb the moisture?
My last trip was just for a few days, so I decided not to take my usual bar soap that I use for my sensitive skin. By the time I got home, my skin was so cracked and itchy, that I realized I will have to carry my soap with me from now on.

I usually pat dry the soap with a towel or synthetic chamois
cloth which I always carry. ( something like the infomercial that
sells Sham Wow).I also dry the soap dish and then put it all in a small zip-
lock bag.

PS

You could also consider cutting the synthetic chamois cloth to fit
the bottom of the soap dish . This should absorb the excess moisture.

What about just wrapping the soap (once you've dried it off) in a small microfiber cloth and putting that in a ziplock? That's what I'm going to do. Should take up less room than the plastic soap box.

Tradd, that should work too. I haven't tried wrapping the
soap with microfiber cloth. I am just wondering if the cloth
might stick to the soap if there is some dampness.

Blot soap dry with towel before leaving hotel. Wrap cloth around it. Put in ziplock. Use cloth for clean up or laundry.

You could even use just a plain ol' thin washcloth from home. Or part of an old one if you've cut up your bar of soap, as I will be doing. I'm going to be using a partial bar of Dr. Bronner's (lavender) for body, hair, laundry.

A square of wax paper (as used in cooking), wax side wrapped around the soap, inside a ziploc baggy.

A facecloth around the bar is what I've also used, after leaving the soap to dry or as mentioned, patting it dry with a towel.

I have found that Handi Wipes (or generic version of one) work well for wrapping the bar. They are ultra thin, highly absorbent, dry quickly and have an exfoliating affect so they can double as a face/wash cloth.

This link illustrates the product but you can probably find them at any general merchandiser such as Target in the home cleaning products section.

Lisa,
Thats a neat idea. Never thought of using handy wipes to
wrap the bar soap. Will try that on my next trip.

I've never had the problem of "wet" soap before but will try wrapping it in a towel next time.
For years at home I have used a magnetic soap holder that holds the soap out and away from the wall and no need to rest on a soap dish; it air dries in a few minutes after my shower. I liked this so much that I constructed one for travel out of a suction cup and a high strength magnet held together with a strong adhesive. i just push a metal soda cap into my bar of soap and pack the suction cup/magnet alongside the soap in a soap box.

We still use the same method from our camping days.
Soap wrapped in facecloth and whole package sealed in ziplok bag.
Any "goo" on the facecloth is rinsed off next time you use it.

What about cutting the bar into single use pieces and tossing as you go?

Thank you everyone for your ideas! I'm leaving tomorrow for a two night trip and I'll be trying some of the ideas. I have cut a piece of Sham Wow to fit the bottom of the box. I have a Handi Wipe to wrap the soap in. My biggest worry is that the Handi Wipe will become one with the soap. And I never would have thought to use a towel to dry the soap off, since I never would do that at home. I guess I need to think outside the box!
