OBOW Light Travel Forum > FLIGHTWISE CARRY-ON SOFTSIDED BAG

I just noticed on the Landsend web site that they are offering
the Flightwise carry-on softsided bag.

Does anyone own this bag?

22 in by 7 by 14 in. -- wt. 2 lbs. 14 oz.Looks
interesting.

Yes it does Dan
See: http://www.landsend.com/pp/CarryonBackpack~210482_-1.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::CNO&CM_MERCH=IDX_00018__0000002455&origin=index

My only concern is the fabric: "600 denier ballistic ripstop polyester"

What does anyone know about this fabric??

Of similar interest might be their Flightwise Soft-sided Carry-on Bag:

This looks to be a "poor man's Air Train." I suspect that the backpacking straps are OK for short distances, probably nowhere as good as those on the Osprey Porter 46. Unlike the real Redoxx Sky Train, this looks to be a single compartment bag, albeit one with 2-inch expansion. That's an interesting concept for someone who has to deal with CRJ luggage bins and the like, which will take a bag that's 7 to maximally 8 inches thick, but not one that's 9 inches.

My hunch is that the overall quality is a notch below either the Osprey Porter 46, or certainly, any of the Redoxx products, including zipper sturdiness, that being the item most likely to fail at some inconvenient place.

Reviewing my written Lands End Home catalogue received today, Flightwise is a complete line of carry-on bags, each of which includes a Travel Set of four bottles sized to pass TSA requirements, packed in a clear heavy plastic or vinyl case, even including...a funnel!

There are a wheeled suitcase, a wheeled duffel bag, plus non-wheeled versions, a backpack, and a "Trip Tote." These are available in five different colors. The heaviest piece, the wheeled suitcase, still only weighs 5 lbs. 12 oz., half the weight of my Travel Pro, and close although not quite the lightest wheeled 22-inch case available. The non-wheeled version is half the weight, half the cost, and as noted above, has an expansion gusset.

Each bag can be monogrammed for $5, not a bad idea, as I think the line will be a success, and the chances seem good that one might end up on a trip where someone else's Flightwise is identical to yours!

"Carry-on collection for smart fliers pays for itself in a few flights!"

Well, at $25 a flight each way, the break even point for the most expensive bag, the 22-inch rolling carry-on suitcase, would be four trips, as it is listed for $170, a bit less than the Antler New Size Zero version, which is $200. And....none of the bags are truly small enough to fit under a Spirit Air seat.

Regardless, I think it's very ENCOURAGING to see L.L. Bean market a series of baggage options like this half dozen options. I think the line will be very successful.

The two Redoxx bags for comparison are the Air Boss and the Sky Train (not the Air Train!) Both are somewhat heavier, around four pounds, and are very robust in construction, important for someone who travels frequently, or who might need to occasionally check the bag.

Somehow, I don't see L.L. Bean marketing Lands End products....that would be like Tom Bihn selling Samsonite. :)

WHOOPS! The above discussion of course is strictly Lands End. There are of course some comparable and well-received L.L. Bean products, previously discussed here, particularly their Quickload series, with which the Flightwise compete. I have to stop posting late at night!

Just remember, Land's End, like K-Mart, is owned by Sears.

I just noticed this bag and have tried to find more info, but it does not seem like many people have them yet.

Here is a video I found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJw0ML7eVYw

I really like the description of this bag and would like to buy one - should somebody have a new or gently-used bag for sale. Please let me know! Too bad Lands End has discontinued it.

I have the Flightwise Carry-on Trip Tote (http://www.landsend.com/pp/CarryonTripTote~210490_-1.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::KSA&CM_MERCH=search-_-flightwise&origin=search). Its size is much more manageable than the soft-sided bag but still roomy enough for my one-bag travel needs. I, too, find that the more I travel the less I carry. I just used this bag for a month-long trip to the Midwest. Also had a small daybag for my elctronics (of which I seem to carry MORE each trip!)

I purchased this bag just before it was discontinued and am VERY pleased with both its size, functionality and construction. I travel for work routinely 2-3 days at a time and the bag has done fine as a carry on or when checked if necessary. Not sure why Lands End stopped offering it but it certainly gets my vote for those that need to pack clothes and an extra pair of shoes for 3-5 days of travel.

I got this bag as a gift but haven't really been able to use it ... If anyone is interested in acquiring a brand-new in box bag, please send me an email:[ sxmacc AT gmail.com ].

Here is a detailed review.

I too thought it could compete with the big boys of luggage and bought one a couple years ago. It works great. It could use a sternum strap. Too bad it is now discontinued.
