How is the old style better than a new one??

Patagonia redesigned the MLC two or three (four?) times in the last decade, each time substituting cleverness for sound design that worked better than the new and improved version. For example, the current MLC has an off-center carry handle intended to compensate for the weight of the unnecessarily large and heavy 17" laptop you aren't going to carry if you can help it. Now the packed bag no longer hangs plumb in your hand and bangs against your legs. Elephant ear zipper access to the outside pocket was odd and excessively open two updates ago; since then it's been replaced with a straight zipper that is unaccountably short and tight. The older designs did the job competently and stylishly without fussiness.

I still have an older MLC, likely the original version, great bag, one large compartment, plus one smaller lid compartment, BUT, the waterproof coating on the otherwise excellent ballistic fabric deteriorated over the years, giving the surface a slightly tacky feel, and the item an odd off-odor. If it hadn't been for that, I would not have ended up acquiring several further newer bags.
