OBOW Light Travel Forum > Reason that make you think you travel too much

I recently saw an article in a BA magazine about reasons why you think you might travel too much. Three of mine, not mentioned in the article are:

I only used hotel pens for 3 years.
At home we have 5 different carry on bags.
I need to take a photo of my car in the airport car park so I can find it when I get back. (I also take a photo of hire cars so I remember what I've got)

What are your reasons?

Back in my tour days, I rarely spent more than one or two nights in the same city but could be on the road for weeks at a time. Quite often, after waking in the morning, I had to look at the phone book to remind myself what city I was in.

Hotel rooms, especially if staying at the same chains, all look alike.

I never think I travel too much. In fact, if I'm home too long, I'll sometimes go to a hotel just to get a change of scenery. Sadly, I sometimes sleep better in hotels than I do at home. (Perhaps I need a new mattress.)

Frank, decorate your bedroom in the same design as your fave hotel room! :-)

I used to fly with Canadian.....a lot....I got to know the crews!
I could probably (and successfully), navigate blindfold around at least four airports.
I have more than 5 carry on bags to fit different travel scenarios / situations.
My husband refers to me as his personal (and free), tour guide.
I like hotel towels so much, I bought white sets for my bathrooms!

You know the little signs you sometimes find in the hotel bathroom telling you to contact the front desk if you forgot some of your toiletries? I have one in my guest bathroom. As well as hotel soaps.

Not got the sign in the spare bathroom but I have got a big bowl of; soaps, shampoo, and a couple of travel toothbrushes.

I read these forums and check the blog two times each day. The tips are invaluable. I had to bring a disabled relative with Alzheimers on an interstate car trip. I know this site is more for those who travel on the airlines to exotic locations or who travel a lot for business -- but you have no idea how much the well-organized and pared down travel suggestions help for carting around an elderly person who can't do much for himself. I used my Tom Bihn Aeronaut for the first time for my elderly relative's things -- so easy and what a godsend that bag is.

I hope the previous post wasn't too off-topic. I was trying to indicate that checking the site frequently was in a way a sign that I'm obsessed with travel.

Elizabeth, thank you for the kind words and let me make one correction:

This site is for anyone who likes to travel light. Whether that person travels once a week, once a year, or once a decade. The mode of transportation doesn't matter--plane, train, car, motor coach, motorcycle, camel.

It's for anyone who wants to either learn about how to travel lighter or to share their experiences with that subject. It can be travel for business or pleasure, to exotic locales or just to the next town. It doesn't matter. Travel is travel and like you said, the one thing we all love to do, is travel.

Signs I travel too much:

1. I once sat next to a Qantas pilot who knew less about how the seat worked than I did.
2. My friends call me the Packing Nerd. And I haven't even told them about my packing lists yet....
3. I recently met a very nice flight attendant with the same name as me. Twice in four weeks.
4. I won't say how many carry-on bags I have (my husband might read this!), but they are all highly specific in their uses!

You book early so you can get your favourite seat.

Every long-haul trip (say over 2 weeks) I have to take, I feel like I need a new carry on bag, because none of the other six wheeled carry on bags or the three backpacks fit exactly the requirements that I see as necessary for this new trip. Looking for and finally buying this new bag is in itself one of the joys of planning a journey, plus working out an intricate/complex itinerary at optimal/minimal cost provides real psychic pleasures.

In my younger days, I toured much more often and to small towns that were built around the industry of the area, like Williston, Grants Pass, etc. Once I knew I liked a place, I would stay at the same motels/small hotel/inn repeatedly. Well, the owners of the establishments got to know my tastes, like a hard mattress, thick pillow, the sunny side, no screaming children, etc. and they would make sure my room was made to my tastes. Some we even knew each other's birthday.

To this day, the best chicken-pot-pie I ever had was from a dinner invite from the couple who owned a motel I was staying at in Boron.
