I got an email from someone I know requesting tips on how to one bag travel for someone over 6'4" I gave some basics of what to do but I want to ask here if there is anyone that tall, or taller, who has successfully one bagged and has some pointers they can share?
I'm only 6 ft tall, 205 lbs. If choosing a roller or spinner, I guess make sure extended handle is high enough to be comfortable when walking. Clothes/shoes are of course bigger and heavier, so if weight restriction is a problem, need to select items and pack more carefully to distribute weight between the one bag and one personal item. Other than that, be more than willing to help other pax place items into overhead lockers, shift items around for more efficient packing, and if sitting in cattle class, stay away from middle seats.
I'm only 6' but the more your clothes weigh, the less you need to bring and wash more often. My wife can bring more than I and we don't bring extra shoes. No wheels either. The lighter my bag, the happier I am. I would think that being ruthless with your packing list would be the best way to cope with bigger clothes.
I'm 6'4" 240lbs and am currently packing for a long weekend in Scandinavia so thick, warm layers etc. I spent many years in the military and in boot camp we had to fold everything to A4 size for kit inspections. Shirts folded like they came out of packets were easy but jackets, trousers, sweaters, everything could be folded to the same dimensions with a little practice. I still do this 25yrs on and everything tessellates nicely into packing cubes and, in turn, into whatever bag I'm packing. It's a great way of counteracting the effect of longer lengths of material on sleeves and trouser legs.
Here is a post I can relate to. I'm 6'11" and found one bagging to be extremely difficult in the beginning especially when traveling to foreign countries where buying clothing was just not an option (Japan, Singapore, et al). My tip is to pack in layers, get a packing cube or folder and compress your things as much as you can, it's also helpful if you bring the bare minimum in order to pack lightly, and wear your heavier clothing in case of cold, storm, etc... Best of luck
I'm 6'3" and 225 - big thing I would recommend is making sure you get a bag that fits you. I bought a Tumi backpack online that is on the smaller side and sits high on my back. I would recommend trying on bags so you feel comfortable with how you will carry it, either on your back, hip/shoulder, etc.
