OBOW Light Travel Forum > Binh/Oxx/Weekender

I’ve watched this blog for years. Some good advice/recommendations. This has always puzzled me. Tom Binh and Red Oxx are always viewed favorably. No question. Good products, well made, lifetime warranties, etc. The TLS weekender from eBags is always available for $70-$80, free shipping, etc. Granted there is a distinct difference in quality . I get that. But unless you travel 300 days a year what exactly makes Bihn and Oxx that much better and worth those prices?

Does the very popularity of the TLS make it less desirable? Is there panache associated with the Oxx or Binh brands that make them popular? Is it the difference between Ford and Ferrari? Both will get you there but you look so much cooler arriving in a Ferrari? Serious question. What are the substantive differences for the average traveler that would make the additional money worth the outlay?

Why do people buy clothes at Macy's when they can get similar items at Walmart for less?

Why do people buy imported Belgian chocolate when Hershey's makes a similar product for less?

For the once a year, two week, plane to cab to hotel traveler, the Weekender is fine. I've used it.

But for anyone who travels more than that and wants a bag they can rely on and know will last for years, then an investment in a better quality bag may be worthwhile. And even some average travelers want a bag they know they can throw anything at and it will survive.

for sure, not to mention the PLEASURE of owning a really well-designed and attractive item, such as the ballistic nylon Tom Bihn Co-Pilot which has become my every day carry bag. We all probably need fewer items, but having those we do own of higher QUALITY adds to our overall life experience.

I'll also add that there is a difference (and an important one for some people) - country of manufacture. Tom Bihn and Red Oxx products are made in the US - you can either visit their factories, while the weekender is not (I'm guessing China or Vietnam). You can also look at Tom Bihn and Red Oxx bags and see the design and decision making process that goes into the final product - pockets just so, where zippers are placed, etc.

I have the Red Oxx Beano duffle bag and wouldn't trade it for the world. I use it for every trip I take by car. I've had multiple duffle bags over the years that just fall apart. The BF went through 2 duffles in 4 years before I bought him one from Red Oxx. The money you spend is worth it if you travel often and don't want your gear to fall apart. I don't fly as much and only in spurts so I use the TLS for those trips. I like the backpack straps over a duffle for airports. If I flew more, I'd upgrade to a Bihn or Red Oxx for that as well.
I have an assortment of other RO and Bihn bags that I use on a daily/weekly basis. I think a lot of it is trial and error...at least on my part...you try something out, if it works great, if not then you keep trying.
