OBOW Light Travel Forum > Prelim packing list for 2 weeks, central Europe

Here's a first pass at a packing list for a 2-week trip to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Background: I'm a middle-aged man, traveling alone. The trip will take place in June and July, and while most of the time will be spent in Munich, Vienna, and Zurich (flying in to Munich and back from Zurich) there may be side trips to some places in the country and to Bratislava, Slovakia. If the weather is favorable at least one day will be at high altitude (discussed previously under "Packable warmth").

The main bag will be an eBags Weekender eTech (old version), with an Eagle Creek guide bag as a day bag. I'm also including a Sea-to-Summit sling bag for the days when I need to carry extra clothing, and for shopping.

Comments: I'm not taking a computer, camera, or cell phone. The Samsung Galaxy has about the same functions as an iPod Touch or a smartphone with no phone service. I've found that I don't take enough pictures to justify a camera, nor do I do much with them, and my cell phone won't work in Europe anyway.

I'm assuming that I'll have to wear or carry the sport coat on all the transit days. That's one of the reasons that I don't want a personal item larger than the guide bag.

Concerns: I'm more concerned about the bulk than the weight -- my clothes, and especially shoes, are large, and I've never had to pack cold-weather gear. When I take a two-climate trip, it's typically in the winter and I need to wear the cold-weather stuff for departure.

The pack towel might be unnecessary, but I'm staying in hotels that have genuine single rooms (one twin bed) and I can imagine that it might be difficult to get extra towels. The pop-up maps aren't strictly necessary, but I like them. I might want to add a kindle, which can use the same charger as the Galaxy.

Use your shoes like packing cubes, fill them with small items. Use a compression bag for your clothes.

Paul, The list looks good but I had to take off my metal-free belt when I went through security in October. If the nude-o-scope is gone, it'll probably be O.K.
