I've never thought of doing that and I've got some nice coloured shirts that could double up as scarves. I suppose that could also extend to sweaters?

I would NEVER have thought to try this! This would be nice when you're outside and the temperature drops a bit. I'd rather have a long-sleeved tee around my neck than a fleece around my waist.
