Just one more arguement for wheeless bags. On Thursday evening I traveled from San Jose to Detroit via Los Vegas on US Airways. The flight was full of business people returning home for the Memorial Day holiday. This meant lots of carry on bags. Half way through the boarding process the gate agent announced that the overhead bins were full, and that all other bags would have to be checked through to their final destination. Oh No! I just didn't want to deal with the extra time waiting for my bags. While the look of dismay was still on my face, the gate agent announced "People that have bags without wheels please step forward". I was immediately there. She let me on with both my carry on AND my business laptop! Walking by the glares of several wheelie bag owners, I boarded the plane and fit my soft sided carry on (an e-bag weekender) into the overhead compartment.

Wheeless Wins.

After hearing Doug Dyment on NPR a few weeks ago, I've all but converted to wheeless. I've done 5 trips using an old (20+ yrs) Boyt 3 zipper bag that I fished out of the basement. I'm now ready to buy one of the bags featured on onebag.com or this site. Just trying to decide which one. The thought of going back to wheels is just not attractive. I travel 2-3 nights every week, mostly domestic.

I've been using the High Sierra Passport 100 for the last 2 1/2 years, on at least fifteen domestic trips and one five week, one bag trip to Europe (in winter!).

The bag has a zip-up cover for the harness and clip on shoulder strap (which I don't use). I "hacked" the bag a bit - removed the internal plastic rigidizer and extra webbing - to cut the weight.
