OBOW Light Travel Forum > One Bagging as a Survival Technique?

In light of recent economic scary-stuff happening in the US right now, I've gotten a little more interested in survival techniques during social or economic collapse. Interested beyond the usual "How will you prepare for the zombie apocalypse?" type reading. (Funny yes, but also some very useful information)

I found this post from someone who is currently living in Argentina, and has survived the collapse of that country for the past few years. Very very interesting reading.

Some of his points got me thinking: Our OneBag travel strategies are quite adaptable to survival situations: LED flashlights, antibiotics, getting clean water "on the go," etc.

Food for thought, at any rate.

I agree. When a hurricane threatens my wife likes to keep such a bag packed and next to the bed. She includes basic supplies, change of underwear, some cash, important papers, that sort of thing. That way if we ever have to take it on the lam we are ready. Obviously she is more prudent than I am, which is fortunate for me. Kind of brings to mind the fable of the grasshopper and the ant. ;)

Worrying about surviving in some situations can be a cause for anxiety. I do have good news on one front. There is a travel towel that is a survival tool. It's the Lightload Towels.
The are very good as an a firestarter, first aid supplement, insulator, static electriciity blocker, mask, wind scarf and much more. it also packs down to the size of a siver dollar. www.ultralighttowels.com is the site. They do have discounts for orders of twelve or more.

Light travel skills may serve you well inasmuch as they allow you to do more with less and get by simply. In a general societal catastrophe I'm nor sure how much anything helps, but for something short of that - sure, the light traveler has a leg up.

I think the thing that is most beneficial to the one bagger and the survivalist is thinking about the essentials.

We look at fancy websites, see shiny new must have gear either to survive the zombies or to see the seven wonders, but truth is we all have what we need in our homes right now, to get out and go.

Spend a little time thinking about what is essential, grab a carry-on and try not to fill it. Save some money on new gear and use the money to spend extra time on your travels.

PS George please leave vaguely disguised advertisements off the forums, thanks.
