OBOW Light Travel Forum > The lightest carry-on bag - The Gauntlet is thrown!

My Reodxx Air Boss should arrive in a day or two. Beyond that, at some poiint I might pick up the A. Saks AE-21, mainly for the situation where my wife and I are traveling with much larger bags, but need something to handle our needed items for an overnight excursion, where we can take clothes that will tolerate some rumpling. I gather that the ASAE-21 can be folded to fit into a larger suitcase. Of course, I already have a somewhat simpler but even smaller REI fold into itself bag, compacts down to 1" x 9" x 10", weighs 10 oz., expands out to 7" x 12.5" x 16", plus a small side pocket, and some mesh sleeves, but the ASAE-21, with its pair of handles convertible into a shoulder strap, seems to be a cut above that. I did use that bag over the summer for an overnight visit to my brother-in-law's cabin, and it was really all I needed.

Please tell us what you think of the AE21. I think it is super interesting and the only reason I haven't bought one is that I really don't need it and funds aren't infinite; too many passions.

I think if one used an EC folder for the fragile items, one would still come out ahead in terms of weight and be able to transport quite a bit of stuff with minimal tare weight and in good condition.

Just don't expect North-pole expedition worthy durability.

It does seem clear that something like the A. Saks AE-21 would be for carry-on ONLY, whereas the far more sturdily constructed Air Boss as needed could be checked. One other role for the ASAE-21 might be to supplement a folding garment bag, for a trip of two to three days by car. While I have the Tumi-Tech Adventure one suiter for that scenario, for most people, that's an unduly expensive option, the ASAE-21 and a folding garment bag being less than half the cost, overall probably lighter, and far easier to store.

One other indication for an ASAE-21 would be for overnight visits to friends who own BOATS, where storage space is very limited. Boat owners do NOT appreciate visitors who bring suitcases. So, if we ever get the chance to visit our friends currently sailing around the world, on their 36-foot sloop, who have now reached the Eastern Mediterranean, an ASAE-21 to share, while leaving our primary suitcases at the hotel would be the way to go.

One bag just reintroduced that should be added to the above list in the under 3 lb. but over 2 lbs. category would be the L.L. Bean Quickload Travel Pack, 22 x 14 x 9, 2 lb. 2 oz. without its curved shoulder strap, but the 2 lb. 7 oz. with it, likely a better measure. Single large compartment with compression straps, opening has addtional thinner but expandable pockets, two carry handles, and zip-away backpack straps, four colors, $99. Likely not a bag for the traveling businessman, but a good middle of the road choice from a reliable mail-order and Web-order merchant.
