They’re not light or cheap but for confidence, cool, and individuality you can wear on your shoulder, check out
Saddleback Leather Company’s gear. The
briefcases (which convert to backpacks of a sort) are to die for, and at $410-$545 your spouse just might kill you if you order one. These are anti-modern, made-one-at-time items and they are beautiful. I dare you to look at one without wanting it. Check out
Gadgeteer’s review.

Have one and travel with it all the time. It weighs about 5-6lbs so is a bit heavy, but is built like a tank. Beautiful workmanship and great customer service from Saddleback Leather.
If I have a lot of stuff to carry, I'll carry my laptop, documentation, books, snacks and other bits in the Saddleback and put my clothes in a Red Oxx Air Boss...or another anti-modern choice that I've used for a LONG time--a Filson Pullman.
