The power of the sport coat

sportcoat.jpgThe most powerful piece of clothing in the male traveler’s wardrobe is a good sport coat. This doesn’t apply to 20-something hostel-stayers and backpackers, but for most men, in most parts fo the world, a nice coat is a real plus. In Europe, where standards of appearance are often higher than in shorts-and-flipflops America, the sports jacket may ensure higher regard and better treatment for the wearer. It will get you in most restaurants, art galleries, and churches with no discomfort. A well-chosen coat can also double as a raincoat and provides a hedge against rapidly changing weather. There’s a reason why so many gentleman dress the way they do in the UK; they simply cannot trust the weather. And they like to look good.

Great. Now what sport coat do you recommend/use? What's pictured on this post?

I was looking at the Twill Presentation Jacket of the MN Zephyr Presentation Jacket at Duluth Trading Co. What say you?

I like the looks of the stuff from Duluth. I'll bet it's not as well tailored as some of the Orvis (orvis.com) jackets. I've found it difficult to buy jackets in particular by mail - fit is so important. Most good places will let you return something if fit is a problem. I'm sure Duluth would work with you.

Re: Orvis - you can often find good stuff in their sale sections and there are several eBay sellers which seem to liquidate their overstocks at large discounts.

Let us know if you find something you really like and we'll pass it along!

I second the Orvis. Also check out Sierra Trading Post. I got an Orvis sport coat, cotton-poly poplin for about $55. I love it, though it's probably 3 season-a bit too light for anything cooler than a very mild winter.

I was just thinking about The power of the sport coat and you've really helped out. Thanks!
