The Rick Steves convertible carryons are on sale (20% off) direct from the the Rick Steves travel store. I haven’t tested these but they come highly recommended and look to be an excellent value. Steves popularized the convertible years ago - sort of made the market. Thanks to OBOW regular Paul for the tip.

I've taken this on several trips now. It's very comfortable to sling over your shoulder and the strap (costs $10 extra) really grips the shoulder without sliding off. In backpack mode there is no internal frame but it doesn't seem to matter, the shoulder and waist straps hold the bag to your back well. The trick to using the zippers is to undo the cinches first to make closing the zippers easier. Other positives: Great quick-access yet protected compartment for a laptop. Good build quality. Well organized. Lots of useful pockets. Negatives: The carry handles are soft and mushy. The cinches don't cinch the bag down far enough. The bag is a bit amorphously shaped. Bottom line: very good value. Does the job and then some. Good purchase.
