REI sale items

I just received an REI sale mailing and it had two items that struck me as noteworthy bargains. Kuhl Kuhldry jeans for men are on sale for $39. The fabric is 67% cotton/33% nylon so they might not be so quick to dry, but who knows? I like the non-blue, non-100% cotton approach for travel. Also they have the excellent Marmot PreCip raincoats for $69. These may be in-store prices as I don’t see them reflected yet on the REI website.

I've been thinking about the precip for an extended hiking trip in New Zealand. But I have heard that the Marmot degrades quickly and leaks. REI's ad for the Precip mentions new styling and extra waterproofing. I wonder if anyone here can speak to the new and improved Precip and whether or not it leaks during a rain. Thanks.

I think I have the old PreCip. I wouldn't call it a hardcore, all-day raincoat. If the success and comfort of your expedition depends on high-quality, can't-miss rain jacket you probably want to consider paying $200 or more on a highly-reviewed GoreTex coat. I paid about $50 for my PreCip. I like it but wouldn't pay $100 for one. The pits zips are nice and it looks good though.

The REI sale has the Arc'teryx Beta SL rain jacket for $180 (normally $250). The fabric is waterproof/breathable Gore-Tex Paclite and is super lightweight (depending on the size, about 10oz). It seems flimsy but it's highly durable, especially for casual use. The pockets are waterproof too.
I have the Alpha SL version and absolutely love it. The Beta SL seems better suited for casual use though: lower hand pockets, smaller drop hood, no pitzips. It's pricy compared to the Precip but I think the quality of materials and construction would be better in the long run.
