Another no-bag travel trench

The first no-bag travel trench was greeted with some derision and skepticism. The latest from ScotteVest is being taken a good bit more seriously. Read more about it at the SeV blog or discuss in it on the OBOW Forum.

It won't be taken very seriously by me. With this garment, The Piltdown Coat, the inventive is taken to the absurd.

You're bringing down the quality of your blog by several notches with this 2nd No Bag Trench Coat story.

I make no assertion that a travel trench is advisable, viable, or practical. This item is of interest because it, like undersized bags and host of other recent inventions, points to how difficult travel is becoming and to what ridiculous ends we sometimes have to resort.

I will have to respectfully disagree with Monte's and John's comments. I would argue that there is a legitimate use for something like this (but most certainly not loaded down as shown in the diagram) and the OBOW site is a reasonable place to discuss it.

Being an "old fart" I remember when wheeled luggage came out and there was a fair amount of derision for that technology, now it is everywhere (unfortunately).

If you have to take a coat you may as well optimize the number of pockets. Just because they are there doesn't mean you have to use them. I see a big advantage to something like this on trips to cold climates, it could very easily mean the difference between being able to carry-on 1 bag and having to check a bag. When I travel to SE Asia and the Middle East I have no problem with 1 bag but when I have to hit Moscow, Calgary or Anchorage space becomes an issue. I think this product could serve me well in such a situation. I will investigate further and if I buy one I will let post a review.

Keep up the good work Brad.

This is another variation on a theme, people requested a longer jacket or coat and Scott listened, which I think is commendable. It probably won't be the last design for this length, he learns from his customers what the pros and cons are and comes up with another version......just like his jackets and vests.
It doesn't have to be packed with hardware, I for one only carry an iPod and cell phone on my travels to the UK so the rest of my pocketed items would probably consist of clothing and important documents, tickets etc.

A few years ago Magellans came out with a female microfibre, belted trench coat (knee length). When I saw it in the catalogue I thought "finally! Someone has twigged that we females want more and larger pockets!" I ordered it. It is a very nice coat but they still didn't get it completely right, some of the inside pockets are a nice size but not large enough to hold the items that the SeV garments allow, the pockets bulge when filled and there is no weight distribution so it hangs awkwardly. I still wear it in Spring and Fall but not for travel. I noticed they discontinued selling it and replaced it with two types of SeV jackets.

The big problem somehow is finding the stuff you put in the pockets. Of course, I try to follow a method where I always put one thing in the same pocket so that I remember where the Ipod or the wallet is for example. Unfortunately, in the heat of traveling I can be less than disciplined.

So when I'm out and about on the airport and I have, in addition to my briefcase and/or onebag, my nice Cole Haan Travel Anorak with seven pockets, a jacket with four pockets and pants with four pockets, things can get VERY confusing. :)
