Pants hack

I’m always on the lookout for a better pair of travel pants, so this post by Kevin at Practical Hacks (no slacker) is of interest:

These slacks are lightweight and loaded with comfort; I wore them on several verywarm days during our trip and they remained cool and comfortable.

Normally $89, they’re on sale as of this writing for $79.  See them here at the Orvis website – Orvis microfiber travel pants. — full post here

I like the microfiber material; though the design of the zippered
pockets being on the left side does not suit me personally.
Also the passport pocket in the front of the pant has no zippers.

I prefer the Railriders adventure khakis which have all their
pockets with zippers. Extremely rugged yet refined.

The Royalrobbins global traveler pant is also a better option;
with all zippered pockets.

Personally I find that microfiber is NOT as comfortable in warm weather as genuine 100% wool, which in a lighter weight fabric makes fine summer pants. The Lands End variant is all I wear to the office, regardless of year, and they are no more expensive than microfiber, sometimes even less. The one downside is that wool is NOT field washable, but, for trips out to two weeks or so, that is simply not an issue. I do travel with at least one pair of REI Adventure pants, largely or completely nylon, that can be field washed if needed.

Alan, true enough that wool is not field-washable, but it resists odor naturally and a good airing out usually works wonders. A little spray bottle of Febreze might be prudently used as well.

For a typical trip, these days I think I'd take one pair of dark lightweight wool pants, one pair of the REI Adventure pants, which are a fairly lightweight nylon, and a pair of North Face Paramount nylon pants, that are zip-offs. That would cover most situations.

Has anyone tried the LL Bean washable wool pants? The description indicates machine washable but I would think sink washing would work if the drying time is not too long.
