Cuddle Class?

In today’s USA Today, Laura Bly writes an article with tips on sleeping in economy class on long-haul flights.

She also mentions a new offering, first from Air New Zealand but possibly soon with other airlines, called the Sky couch—a row of three seats that converts into a bed. While she points out this is not a good idea for strangers, it might work for couples. A couple can buy two of the seats and get the thrid at a discount.

I don’t know, this could spawn a whole new industry—“Skycouch Matchmaking.”

Of course, I have the answer to much of their worries—-bunk beds.

How To Sleep in Economy Class

When I was a child, my parents used to book a row on our flights to England. Each parent took and end seat, and I got the middle one. Then, during the flight, I got the footspace in front of the row to be my bed. Cuddle class is not new.

The one thing that irks me about sleeping in any sort of seat is that the seats recline either too little or too much to properly support your spine. I have had a far easier time sleeping sitting up when truly sitting completely upright. No lean back. Not even a little bit. This allows my spine to support the entire weight of itself, my upper body, and my head. This makes my upper body feel weightless. I don't nod my head down. There are no cricks in my neck or back. I wake rested and refreshed. Helping me in this endeavor is a nice, firm, C(ervical) collar.

Bunk beds sounds like a great idea, until you realize you're traveling at 500 mph and a sudden air pocket has you airborne across the cabin.

We would definitely take this option for a long flight. The price is pretty good considering the costs of first class. Decent leg room, even if you are too tall to lay down all the way. Hope more airlines adopt.
