Daily Roundup--October 28, 2011

Here’s one overpacker’s attempt at one-bag travel.

Happy Birthday Lady Liberty……125 years old today. (She doesn’t look a day over 110!!!).

Ever wonder what happens to all those items left at airport security? You might be surprised at the answer.

Mr Overpacker needs an intervention. My niece got one on an Appalachian Trail backpacking trip. They were stopped at their first hostel with some other backpackers and totally exhausted from carrying too full packs. One of the others offered to help, so they handed over their stuff.

He proceeded to go through and reduce or toss everything he considered excess. Squeezing the toothpaste down to a week's worth along with other products, throwing away half the underwear.... When they objected he pointed out that they were stopping often enough to buy more toothpaste and wash their clothes. They only needed enough to last them to the next destination. My niece decided to trust him and was glad she did. It lightened her load considerably.

The goal of every onebagger, at least on this site, is to have zero checked luggage.

There's nothing wrong with checking luggage, but it's not light travel. It's not "onebagging" according to our definition. (There are always extenuating circumstances such as the airline forces you to check, or you're traveling to a place where you need extra gear or equipment.)

And that's where we come in. For those who strive to be light travelers, learn from those who have done it in the past. Just be aware that not all the advice given is true "light" travel.

Traveling with the maximum allowed wheeled carry-on and an equally maximum sized personal item....and then just checking it all because you need a third bag from purchases may be "lighter" travel than one is used to but it's not our definition of "light" travel. It's definitely not "onebagging."
