Daily Roundup--December 7, 2011

Today is the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Our thoughts go out to the brave men and women who fought to preserve our freedoms.

American Airlines will begin codesharing with Open Skies, the discounted all business class airline that flies between Newark and Paris’ Orly airport. Flights between Washington Dulles and Orly start again next spring.

And speaking of American Airlines, it seems it’s gotten itself into a little word tussle with Alec Baldwin.

First read this.

And then read this.

I do suspect that the company which uses Baldwin, where his line is "But I have played an airline pilot on television" will now REMOVE them...and perhaps also Baldwin as a spokesperson. Anyway, this dumb smart Alec seems just another celebrity whose dramatic talents include the ability to effectively play one particular role: terminal aperture of the digestive system.

Mr. Baldwin is just a highly visible version of what I've been seeing regularly when I travel. Self-entitlement and petulance in the face of authority and safety. More than once I have observed a stranger seatmate who fakes turning off their electronic device so the attendants don't bother them and so they don't have to power up again later on. Heaven forbid their music be interrupted.

I once confronted a man about it and his childish response was "everyone is doing it."
