Beltless bummer?

I received a message on twitter that said the new backscatter x-ray scanners will mean even non-metallic belts must be removed. Anyone know about this?

Newfangled scanner or not, the TSA makes me remove my completely non-metallic belt about 50% of the time, even when I tell them it's non-metallic. It seems to be one of those "discretion of the officer on the scene" things.

My old ex-officio nomad pant has been manufactured with
the nylon belt sewn into the pant. I wonder how that would
work with this scanner?

Excellent question!

I guess that means strip searchs for those with integrated belts! Maybe I should look for some non-metallic suspenders...

Why would non-metallic belts differ from bra straps? Maybe one day soon we'll all fly in identical, disposable Tyvek coveralls with little elastic-top booties - and nothing else.

More to Till's liking I'm sure:

I went thru the scanner at SLC last Thursday and they required you to remove everything from your pockets (and I mean everything) and remove your belt.

My belt was sewn in to the shorts I was wearing. but I was allowed to go thru anyway. They hold you just outside of the scanner until they get the all clear from the scanner observer. The belt was picked up by the scanner and I had to go thru a patdown to confirm I was wearing a belt.

The scanner sees all, though you do still have to remove your shoes.

I wear a nylon and plastic belt and have never, since I've started wearing it, been asked to take it off. When asked to remove my belt I show The Machine guard my belt with my thumb behind the buckle to make it stick out so it can be easily seen. That is just another example of the uneveness of security techniques by the Thousands Standing Around. Some do and some don't.

If you do get the scanner, insist on a pat-down. It's the least you can do for civil disobedience. Also insist on a private area and insist on having your luggage never out of sight. All of these are your rights.

For an additional joke play super ticklish. It will make the job on the TSA agent harder. That is not kind from human to human but you are fighting the system here. When the TSA job gets so hard that either no one wants to do it anymore or they have to pay crazy amounts of money for people to do it, they will re-think their approach.
