With all the comments about the JakPak I thought it wise to post a graphic and a link.

Bright idea, overdone, too expensive. As well, if I'm going to get a sleeping bag, I need some insulation. It's COLD outside!

What most travelers could use is a DUAL-LENGTH jacket-coat.

The top should be waterproof/breathable fabric, similar to what Marmot uses for their PreCip jacket. Front should be a zip plus a flap over that. One would wear the jacket that way most of the time. Colors should include black and khaki for urban/suburban usage, but also some brighter ones for the backcountry. Marmot makes the PreCip in more colors than the rainbow.

Beyond that there should be a mesh pocket over the rear mid-line, that would hold a fold out EXTENSION, which could be just non-breathable coated nylon, as found on a poncho, which then would snap around the inside of the base of the jacket, converting a garment perhaps 30 inches long, base of the neck to the bottom seam, to one at least 42 to as much as 52 inches long (in an XL, my size, as an example) This would require a square yard or so of fabric, adding another 2.5 oz, plus another few ounces for the snaps, mesh pocket, and the like.

So, instead of a 13 oz. hip length PreCip, we'd get an 18 oz. "PreCip Plus, " obviating the need to have both a wind jacket and a rain jacket. Ovetrall, the idea paralles that of "convertible" field pants, which zip off to provide a pair of shorts.

Would it be...STYLISH? Probably NOT. Would it be difficult to make? I doubt it. How expensive might it be? Maybe $50 more than a regular PreCip or similar jacket. Has someone already designed or marketed such a garment? I haven't seen one, but I think it would have commercial potential, at least for the REI crowd. Would I buy one? Well, you know ME, you can ask my wife what MY coat CLOSET looks like!

you must go here:

the jacket is exactly that: waterproof/breathable on the top and the flap on the front has a zipper underneath. It also comes in black.

Look up the artist Lucy Orta. She has come up with similar ideas as art already in the 90s.

Fascinating.

I think that this is a graet little bivy sack - an extra lightweight bit of insurance for hiking in mountainous areas. Cool!

Three pounds? Any decent tent weighs 1-1.5 lbs. This is pretty pointless.

Thanks for checking out Lucy Orta. She is indeed a very good artist and is rather under-appreciated, which is the fate of many female artists, unfortunately. I wrote a little about her in my masters in the role of clothing in contemporary art in 2001.

A 3lb jacket-tent is indeed a totally stupid gimmick if you can get a much better real tent at 2lb and a much better real jacket at 1lb.

FAIL!

I say love Lucy and no fail on jakpak. Tent, jacket and bivy at 3 lbs is all good with me. Pretty cool stuff.
