I imagine every airline frontline customer contact person---counter agents, gate agents and flight attendants--has to live though this exchange verbatim, all day every day, 50-60 times out of every 100 passengers.
I know that exact guy has stood in front of me and pulled the same succession of ridiculous bluffs at half the check-in's I've done in my life.
I've spent most of my fliying life hoping the check in agent would upgrade me but would never dare say anything (I don't have points or air miles etc). My parents were booted up to business on one flight and my Aussie mate also got bumped up at check in at Toronto (and she was head to toe in jeans / denim). We were both gobsmacked. Maybe one day it will happen for me but I'm not pushing it.
